About Our Program
At Daesyn, we believe that temperament starts in the womb. No amount of training will ever overcome faulty temperament passed on through generations; and as such, our breeding dogs will always be of stable, confident and friendly nature, free of sound sensitivities, and free of any aggression. They should be easy to live with, easy to travel with, and comfortable in new environments. They should have good work ethics, handler focused, and enjoy working with their people.
The Irish Setter breed standard calls for dogs that are never fearful, shy, or aggressive; the rollicking temperament is a hallmark for the breed.
We strongly believe in extensive health testing to ensure we are producing healthy, sound dogs. When testing a dog, we utilize a genetic health panel from Paw Print Genetics (PPG), and both a Thyroid blood test and X-rays of hips and elbows, which are then read and scored by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Every one of our breeding dogs are CHIC certified and are health tested to be free of the following before a breeding is ever considered:
Hip dysplasia (OFA), Elbow dysplasia (OFA), Thyroid disease (OFA), Degenerative Myelopathy (PPG), Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy (Irish Setter Type) (PPG), Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency, Type I (PPG), Progressive Retinal Atrophy (Irish Setter Type) (PPG), Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Rod-Cone Dysplasia 4 (PPG), Von Willebrand Disease I (PPG).
If a dog is genetically tested and comes back as a carrier, he or she will only be bred to genetically tested clear dogs. This ensures that no puppy will be affected by the genetic disease. Our breeding dogs are also heavily monitored for untestable diseases, such as epilepsy.
How We Raise Our Litters
We are dedicated to adhering strictly to the Puppy Culture, Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), and Early Scent Introduction (ESI) protocols in the upbringing of our litters. These comprehensive programs are designed to foster a stable, engaged, and responsive temperament in each puppy right from birth. The Puppy Culture protocol focuses on early socialization, enrichment activities, and positive training methods to promote well-rounded development. Early Neurological Stimulation involves specific handling exercises that aim to improve neurological function and stress tolerance. Additionally, Early Scent Introduction introduces puppies to various scents, enhancing their ability to identify and respond to specific odors, which can be beneficial for tasks such as detection work or competitive scent sports.
By the time our puppies are ready to join their new homes at 10 weeks old, they have already received foundational training in house and crate manners, have been introduced to the clicker for positive reinforcement training, and have undergone extensive socialization. Our puppies are raised indoors with us, fully integrated into our family life. They are exposed to a variety of animals, experiences, and interactions with different people, which helps to ensure they are well-adjusted and confident companions.
We utilize a thorough evaluation process for each puppy, incorporating both Avidog testing and Volhard testing. These assessments focus on understanding each puppy's unique personality traits, such as sociability, confidence, and adaptability. Avidog testing involves observing behaviors related to social attraction, following, restraint, and retrieving, while Volhard testing assesses aspects like responsiveness to handling, independence, and sensitivity to stimuli. These tests provide valuable insights into the temperament and behavior tendencies of each puppy.
Additionally, our puppies undergo structural evaluations conducted by seasoned dog show professionals and mentors. This evaluation assesses physical conformation and breed standards to determine the potential for success in conformation shows or other competitive events.
Combining the results from temperament testing and structural evaluations, along with insights gained from daily interactions and observations, we carefully match each puppy to the most suitable home environment. This process ensures that the puppy selected is compatible with your family's lifestyle, preferences, and expectations.
Puppy selections are typically finalized between 8 and 9 weeks of age, following comprehensive consideration of all evaluation factors. At this time, we announce which puppy has been identified as the best fit for you, based on our collective assessment and your specific preferences.
